The First Sunday of the Month

I have truly enjoyed the first Sunday of the month. I look forward to it with great anticipation. Not only is it the Sunday we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, but I have also been encouraged by both your elders and your Missions and Ministry Team to conduct a brief interview with those associated with Providence Baptist in doing missions and ministry both locally and abroad. Communion Sunday is the perfect time for the interview to occur. As we celebrate the body of Christ at the supper, we are reminded how we are joined to our fellow brothers and sisters who are kingdom building around the world. I personally love to hear how God is blessing the work of those whom we are a part. It also allows us to take up a love offering for the various ministries presented (what we used to call ‘the offering for the poor’- and FYI: we still have a budgeted line item for the poor but this allows us to have a specific focus for the offering). So far, we have had testimony from Robert and Lindsey Smith serving in Madison, Wisconsin, Nathan and Kimberly Neely who are adopting children from West Africa, and Greg Barnett who will be serving in the Pacific Rim next month. I am thrilled to be able to pray, support and hear how the Lord is working through their ministries.
This month is no different. This coming Sunday we will be hearing from Callie Dixon. Callie is a student at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, GA. She has been studying economics and community development under Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkart, the authors of the book When Helping Hurts. This summer, Callie will be working as an intern doing community development in inner-city Memphis, TN. She will be telling us about her program Sunday morning. There will also be an opportunity for you to assist Callie as she prepares to go. I hope you will join us on Sunday to hear Callie’s testimony and worship the God who is continuing to build His kingdom throughout the world.
