Fifteen years and going strong …

It seems hard to believe, nine years ago, via Facebook, my friend from high school asked me to come down from Winchester, TN to see her church. I had just resigned my previous position in order to attend school overseas and I finally ran out of excuses to say no. So, on one Sunday in September, 2009, Ella and I drove down to Huntsville for our very first experience at Providence Baptist Church.

I was completely blown away by what I experienced. From the moment I entered the sanctuary, I knew this was a people who had a high view of God and his word. When I got home, I relayed my experiences with my wife and she said she would like to try that out too. So the following Sunday we returned. And on the way home, we contemplated making Providence our home church. Which we did. We were presented to the church the second Sunday in January.

After finishing school in the United Kingdom, I had designs to serve internationally. But again, the Lord had other plansMany are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.’ (Proverbs 19:21). In October of 2012, Providence found itself without a pastor. I agreed to serve as an interim. And within a year later, it became apparent I was supposed to stay and continue my work in the pulpit.

Now, as I enter into my sixth year as Pastor, I am amazed at what God has done in this place. Our previous pastor used to quote Psalm 63:8 ‘My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.’ He reminded us to go hard after Jesus. I think we are still doing that.  Providence is still thriving as a church. More people continue to come through her doors. She is more globally minded than ever before, but she also has a presence within our community. People are being called from her ranks to serve in ministries both near and far. We have had our share of challenges, but God is good. He is faithful. He has been our strength through it all.

I hope you will join us on Sunday to mark this occasion. We will celebrate with baptisms and testimonies. Kim Vaughn has planned an outstanding reception out at Meadow Farms. ‘Let us love and sing in wonder. Let us praise the saviors name.’

I want to thank God for each and every family in our church. It was seeing your faithfulness that drew me to this place. And it continues to fuel my desire to be with you now. I consider it a privilege to celebrate this milestone with you. 1 Timothy 1:17 ‘To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen’.
